When You Can’t Sell Yourself, It’s Time to Reset

Last week, I went to a trade show.
I met the owner of a sales consultancy and he did what good salespeople do: he started asking questions.

“So, what do you do?”

It’s a simple question. One I’ve answered hundreds of times before.
But this time… I froze.
I stumbled my way through a half-baked version of what Business Life Support does. Something about helping small businesses grow, something about marketing and operations toolkits but it didn’t feel clear, confident or even consistent.

And that moment stuck with me.

Because if I couldn’t confidently talk about my own business, how could I expect others to feel confident in it?

When You Lose Sight of Yourself

As business owners, we wear so many hats that it’s easy to lose track of who we are and what we stand for.
Somewhere between client work, admin, and keeping the lights on, the clarity that once fuelled us fades into the background.

You start to sound vague when someone asks what you do.
You second-guess your prices.
You tweak your website again, hoping that changing a few words will make things click.

But the truth is:
When you’re not clear on who you are and what your business stands for, everything feels harder.

Your confidence drops.
Your message becomes muddled.
And your audience feels it, even if they can’t put their finger on why.

The Realisation

That trade show moment was a wake-up call.
So I hit pause.

I stepped back and spent the week redefining:

  • Who I am, as the person behind the brand.
  • What Business Life Support really stands for.
  • Why it exists and who it’s truly here to help.

It wasn’t about rewriting my business. It was about realigning it, stripping back the noise and getting clear again on the why.

Because you can have the best website, the best products and services, and the best marketing in the world but if you can’t say with conviction what you do and why it matters, it won’t land.

How to Reset and Realign Your Business Identity

If you’ve found yourself in the same spot. Unsure, unconfident, or just out of sync with your business – here’s a process that helped me get back on track:

1. Start with Your “Why”

Revisit why you started your business in the first place.
What problem were you passionate about solving? What values guided you then?
Write it down, not for a pitch deck, but for you.

2. Re-define Your “Who”

Who do you actually serve today?
Businesses evolve, and so do your clients. Be honest about whether your ideal customer has changed or whether you’ve outgrown the market you first targeted.

3. Clarify Your “What”

Can you explain what your business does in one confident, conversational sentence?
If not, strip it back.
Forget the jargon. Focus on the outcome you deliver, not just the service you provide.

4. Check Your Alignment

Does your current brand, your website, social posts, tone, and visuals still reflect who you are and what you stand for?
If not, it’s time for a refresh. Alignment breeds confidence.

5. Live It

Once you’ve realigned, live it.
How you speak, sell, and show up should all reinforce what your brand stands for.
Your business isn’t separate from you – it’s an extension of you.

The Takeaway

That awkward trade show moment turned out to be one of the best things that could’ve happened.
It forced me to pause, reflect, and rebuild my confidence from a place of clarity.

Because when you’re sure of who you are and what your business stands for everything else starts to flow.
Your marketing feels more natural.
Your conversations feel more confident.
And your business feels more you.

Sometimes, growth starts with getting back to your foundations.

So, if you’ve been feeling a bit off lately take this as your reminder to check in.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I being true to myself and my brand?
  • Do I still believe in how I present my business?
  • Is it time to pause and reset?

If you’re feeling a bit lost in your business, unsure how to talk about what you do, or just needing a reset, don’t do it alone.

Sometimes what you need isn’t another strategy or checklist. It’s a fresh perspective, someone to ask the right questions, and a safe space to untangle your thoughts.

That’s exactly what our Life Support sessions are for. A chance to step back, get clear, and rebuild confidence in yourself and your business.

Because sometimes, the best way forward starts with a good conversation.
